Networked Knowledge & Finely Curated Catalogs.
No. 3601 | 9 thoughts on the guides and their collections.
Hello lovelies!
I do love me a good guide! As I mentioned last week I’ve set up my own little resource directory so this week I thought I’d noodle for a bit on some of the sources I’ve tripped over for gathering useful knowledge...the ones who have a similar aesthetic or frame of mind to mine. If you have any good sources I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
MARIA POPOVA | The Marginalia | wisdom
I’m sure most of you already know of Maria Popova, curator extraordinaire, who has been writing The Marginalia, “a thoroughly one-woman labour of love that remains ad-free, AI-free, and fully human”, for 20 years now...and who still reigns! I like what she says in this post from way back in 2011 about networked knowledge and combinatorial creativity.
“We are a collage of our interests, our influences, our inspirations, all the fragmentary impressions we’ve collected by being alive and awake to the world. Who we “are” is simply a finely curated catalog of those.”

BENJAMIN ASTON | Word of the Day | collection
In 2023, Benjamin Aston began a word of the day (WOD) project on Instagram, which has now organically grown to an audience of over a million people. Through a shared love of literature, language and storytelling, he and partner Mabel Evans, have recently introduced a podcast series called Wodcast focused on long-form conversations exploring the power and beauty of words.

VACATION WITH AN ARTIST | mini apprenticeships | travel
A platform where you can search for either an artform that interests you or a destination, and then pick whichever master artist or craftsman experience appeals the most. The stays range from 3-7 days, averaging 4 hours in the studio each day with use of their tools, equipment, materials, and quite often unique accommodation for an extra fee.
Here are a few examples that I thought sounded quite tempting...

PLUS MAGAZINE | bi-weekly picks | guides
Plus Magazine is a New York–based biannual print and digital publication dedicated to contemporary art, design, and culture. Contributors range from emerging voices to established figures across disciplines, fostering conversations that move between generations, geographies, and mediums. I like their nicely designed “bi-weekly picks” posts that delve into some of the favourite places, books, exhibits, etc of their featured artists and designers.

PROVIDER STORE | shop | guides
instagram | website | city guides | recipes
I can’t recall how I first discovered this Sydney shop but, aside from carrying an artful selection of slow-made Japanese homewares in a beautiful little space, owner Tara Bennet, also has a very well done set of city guides in the journal section, along with recipes, chats with makers, etc.
The ex-shopkeeper in me is a tiny bit jealous of how well she’s pulled all this together...I know how much work it all is! She even has what looks to be a beautiful hidden gem of a home rental in the Lenah Valley in Tasmania called Provider House Hobart.

KATY HESSEL | art historian | The Great Women Artists

The ever prolific and articulate art historian, Katy Hessel, has run The Great Women Artists instagram account since 2015, authored several books, writes a regular column for The Guardian, hosts a podcast where she interviews artists and writers, co-hosts Sky Arts Artist of the Year, and seemingly never sleeps!

XANTHE APPLEYARD | Love You to the Core | podcast
“Hot for the internet” Xanthe Appleyard might seem like an odd choice for me as I no longer run a business (and am of an entirely different generation), but I find her quick intelligence and idiosyncratic energy irresistible, and only wish I’d discovered her podcast sooner! On paper she’s an expert and educator in online leadership and digital dynamics, supporting small business founders with sustainable and fun social media strategies, brand marketing, and strategic community building.
“My secret sauce isn’t perfection, it’s action. I am an embodiment of forward motion — making whatever next move is required to get me closer to where I want to be — and my gift lies in synthesizing everything I learn, along the way.”
